C&O service opportunities coming up soon

Crew, Packs and Troops!

Janet Cacciatore of the C&O Canal Trust is interested in some help from Scouting.

The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal runs through 5 Boy Scout councils as it winds from Washington DC to Cumberland MD.  Many of our units have biked, kayaked, hiked and backpacked portions of it.

Now we have a chance to give back--and maybe work in a little camping, too.

The 2010 Canal Pride Days (flyer)are coming up, with opportunities for service.
Williamsport (205 W. Potomac St., Williamsport, MD 21795):  Saturday, May 1st – 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM

•Painting the aqueduct railing
•Filling potholes
•Planting trees upstream from Lock 44
•Clearing vegetation
•Pulling invasive species
•Painting signs
Paw Paw (Paw Paw Campground, Milepost 156.2, MD Rt. 51 prior to the WV line):  Saturday, May 8th – 8:30 AM to 12:00
•Painting and replacing picnic tables
•Filling potholes
•Installing grills and fire rings
•Clearing vegetation
•Installing new signs

Visit http://www.canaltrust.org/canalpridedays-2010.php for more information or to register.

The Purslane Run hiker/biker campsite is at MM 156.9, so that would be a short walk.  The Jordan Junction hiker/biker campsite is at MM 101.2, which would also be a short walk from Williamsport at MM 99.6.  Please be aware, though, that Jordan Junction has a small number of campsites so you might need to use group tents rather than individual tents if you want to camp there.

Please let me know if you need further information. You can either register your group online or send the number of volunteers to me to add to our volunteer list.

The Williamsport office of the National Park is on the C&O and has a small museum.  And if you've never hiked through the Paw Paw Tunnel...well, we won't spoil the fun.
